US Secret Service Statement

The United States Secret Service confirmed in a preliminary statement issued on May 23, 2026 that the suspect pulled a weapon from his bag and opened fire near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. In their own words:

“Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire. No injuries were sustained by officers.”

The agency confirmed the incident remains under active investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Why It Matters

This is the second serious security incident near the president in under a month. Less than four weeks ago, a suspect was arrested at a Washington hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in what authorities described as an attempted assassination attempt.

Two incidents of this nature in such a short window raise serious questions about the security environment surrounding the presidency. It also puts renewed pressure on the Secret Service, an agency that has faced intense scrutiny over its protective protocols in recent years. The fact that the suspect had already been issued a stay-away order suggests a failure somewhere in the threat monitoring and enforcement chain, as he chose to ignore it.

What Comes Next

The suspect’s identity and motive have not been publicly released. The Secret Service has confirmed the investigation is ongoing.

Expect federal authorities to face pointed questions about how a person under a stay away order was able to approach a White House checkpoint armed and undetected.
