The first call arrived around 1:00 a.m. The caller posed a simple math question, then announced that the 8th Nationwide Gas Pipeline had been hit. Minutes later, the National Iranian Gas Company’s dispatch center confirmed an explosion had occurred. A second call followed shortly after, again with a math question, this time announcing the 9th Nationwide Gas Pipeline as the next target. Israel has not commented on or claimed responsibility.
What Happened in 2024?
The February 14, 2024 explosions struck two major pipelines forming part of Iran’s south to north trunk line system, which carries natural gas from the vast South Pars production field near the Persian Gulf northward to cities and provinces approaching the Caspian Sea. This network is not peripheral infrastructure. It is the backbone of Iran’s domestic energy supply, delivering heating fuel to homes, businesses, and power plants across the country during peak winter demand.
Hitting these specific lines carried maximum disruption potential. Iranian repair crews moved quickly to limit outages, but the attack was widely described as one of the most significant acts of infrastructure sabotage inside Iran in recent memory. At the time, Iranian officials publicly attributed the blasts to terrorism and sabotage, with Owji pointing toward Israel, though no evidence was made public and no group claimed responsibility.
Why This Matters
What Owji’s account reveals goes far beyond the 2024 explosions themselves. If accurate, it points to a level of Mossad penetration inside Iran’s most sensitive government and energy security systems that extends well beyond intelligence gathering.
